"The Cigarette-Butt Man":
Roaming these parts, is a man, with a scrawny body, dirty jeans, stained t-shirt, greasy hair, and not a single cent on him. a man with an addiction to feed, but no money to supply it. he is "the cigartte-butt man", scavenging the sidewalks along local streets, digging through trash cans, scanning empty parking lots, just for one thing, left over cigarettes, the butts of them, tiny tid-bits to keep his addiction at bay. If he does come across some spare change, it's for the real thing, cigarettes, never food. He's a walking zombie, one with his own affliction. no sleep, and he doesn't eat, he'd rather die of starvation and sleep deprevation, than to let his insides twist with the "need" for his beloved nicotine. He is "the cigarette-butt man".

This is SO powerfully stated to me!! I am a smoker, much to my own chagrin. I just watched my Grandfather dying of complications due to both cancer and stroke this past Spring, he was in so much pain--- and the only 2 things that my beloved grandpa repeatedly asked for? Cigarettes & coffee. That was also very powerful to me, makes me think of the power of addiction and how much of a hold it really does have. Terrific and poignant write!

I'm so sorry about your grandfather. The sad thing is, the "Cigarette Butt Man" seriously does exist. That's his nickname. He roams our local park. Sad but true. I feel for people like this.

The other sad thing is that the universe exists in such a way that the things we enjoy can drive us over these edges. Too bad cigarettes and coffee can't just be enjoyed without pain and suffering. Still, you painted a powerful portrait. I wonder what drives his apathy, or if he just feels free as he is?
