When China Comes Calling: The dust bowls that are a quarter the size of the USA, Blow hard on the minds of the prescient, The rise of the Yangtze River screams the death knell of temples, As the peasants climb away from home, The grain stocks are almost gone and crops are failing, Oceans rise and push inland slowly, Squeezed between hungry blowing Earth and drowning swamps, The deserts, oceans, and river are coming, But who's going to feed that nearly a billion, When China comes calling? AquarianM By: Daniel A. Stafford (C) 12/18/2003 Author's Comments: The Earth Policy Institute's analysts believe that China's grain storage will be completely depleted by 2004 - and that the huge country will for the first time in history turn to grain exporters such as the USA for food imports - In such quantities that US citizens will be competing with Chinese import companies for food. At the same time, crop yields worldwide are declining due to the advance of global warming. See the report at: www.earth-policy.org/Updates/Update31.htm

'Elle - what scares me even more is that so few people have a clue and that there is very little being done in preparation for this, as well as the way the jobs have left this country. The political climate under the Republicans...I can see the stage being set to make the Great Depression look like child's play but there is some small hope. Check out this candiidate's web site under the "platform" link and tell me what you think - www.kucinich.usDan

Im not a news buff, it's depressing. I guess If I want to learn about what is going on in the world, I'll come here. It's not to say Im ignorant, I have my views, and I do know what is going on, I just prefer not to watch/read it.

Checked out the link, Dan. Kucinich sure is interesting, but how viable of a candidate would he be against Bush? Not that (right now) I am in support of Kerry, either... I have been keeping my eye on John Edwards, truthfully. He reminds me greatly of JFK (before my time, but a president that was beloved by many) and he does have good sound when it comes to the environment and other issues that are important to me (tax breaks for buying American-made products, jobs, economy and general family values. He also has a charisma that could rival anyones, making him appealing (in my opinion) to many across the board, but.. he's also very young, making him not appealing to seniors. It's hard to figure out (right now) where everyone stands on the issues, because many aren't taking a firm stand in fear of turning away delegates with a strong stance one way or another. Bookmarked the link and will be going back to take a closer look at Kucinich... will he stay in the race if he doesn't win any of the upcoming primaries? What are your thoughts on a Kerry/Edwards ticket? Edwards as VP?
Dyna... I know what you mean about depressing. Especially in this election year, I am making a point to try to stay informed. The hard thing is trying to get REAL news versus tabloid bullshit. I am so sick of hearing about Michael Jackson!@^&*! I am more interested in knowing how our men and women overseas are doing and how our government is robbing us of our civil liberties slowly with each passing day. But, since CNN and all the other networks are in the pockets of politicians, we have to source for real information these days. They wouldn't shoot it straight if the target was 6 inches away! Anyway, Dan is great about getting the word about important issues out through his poetry and personal campaigns-- I've known him quite awhile now, and have learned a lot from him.
Keep us posted, Dan!

'Elle, so far Dennis has said he's staying in until the end. It's early on in the primaries yet and the media is giving him next to no time so many people do not even know he exists yet or what he's all about, but there is a strong online effort to educate the public aside from mass media. Also, something to consider - as long as you vote Democrat in the primaries, there's no worry about "splitting the vote" until the general election. This is the time to vote with your heart - after the Democratic candidate is actually nominated they will get my vote regardless in the general election because I absolutely shudder at the thought of four more years, it's close to physical pain. But right now, I'm voting for what I believe in. try this: www.presidentmatch.comIt will run you through a series of poll questions and then show how close each candidate is to your views. I know that DJK is the only candidate who voted against Patriot and Iraq...and I have never BELIEVED in a politician in my life until I ran across Dennis Kucinich. At 42 years old, that says a lot.
