Someone I know lost their love in the past year... they are watching the devastation from Katrina and feeling even stronger than a lot of us the pain of the people who have lost a lot of what makes their lives worth living. As I thinking of this friend.. I wrote this. Memories by the LC Poet
Memories of the one I lost come flooding back As the hurricane creates chaos so do soft bittersweet memories
great pain great loss only because we knew love beyond the bounds of physical affection
An intimacy beyond words beyond comprehension a savoring of souls a melding of hearts
The sorrow battles but slowly abates giving way to the memories of love strong, healing, and forever

I have a lump in my throat that wont go away. A sadness bubbling inside for all of these people. I see how something like this could trigger the past losses of many. I felt this same helplessness after 9-11. We are not powerless, though.... as long as we have words and expressions. I hope you gave a copy of this to your friend. Just to have friends like you is heart-warming, and support during hard times reaffirms that your friend is loved and cared for.

She had lost the love of her life this past year.. and indeed the suffering of those people reminded her of her own suffering. I shared this with her.. and she thanked me. It's so hard to know what to say to people.. but I've learned over the years, people appreciate you acknowledging their loss.. it doesn't make them sadder as I had once feared... but allows them to share a tiny piece of their burden with you because you care.

Dipity:
I appreciate the last stanza most of all, it's so true that we remember most of all the love we had. And so it should be.
