First, upload your image to a server. The server has to be one that allows images to be shown off site .... GeoCities, for example, won't let you link to their server to steal a jpg file.
If you want the pic to show in the post, use
[ img ] then your url and [ /img ]. Remove the spaces before and after the img and the/img characters inside the brackets or the image won't show.
There should be no extra spaces between the opening and closing img tags either.
My file is www.nanookofthenashwaak.com/images/stjohn/fallsnow.jpg.
So, with the img tags, it looks like this:
