I enjoy going for walks in the woods, but it’s not like it used to be. Nowadays, every footpath has been churned into a series of deep mudholes by all-terrain vehicles, and people are using these roads as dumps. A typical stroll in the small wooded area near my home leads past piles of furniture, smashed television sets, full green garbage bags, and all manner of rubbish. Rural roads are awash in coffee cups, old rugs, tires, rusting vehicles, mattresses, et cetera. The only place I can take a peaceful walk is in the local municipal park, if you don’t mind the din of traffic on the streets all around. I thought people were becoming environmentally aware. But it turns out they are too tight-fisted to pay two bucks and take their garbage to the landfill. They’d rather throw it on the side of the road. Walkers have rights too. All I ask is a clean place to take a stroll. But that seems too much to ask for. What's it like where you live? Are people more civic-minded in your town? Ken

That is so sad to hear.... I, too have noticed litter and garbage on sides of roads and it makes me ill. Not only are we crowding out nature with our suburbs, but we're taking our trash to the only sanctuaries that remain. We should be so ashamed to care that little about our environments.

Sad news indeed. Here around Chicago, the parks and nature preserves are pretty clean, so are the state parks, but I don't get in much rural hiking so I only see the designated park spaces.
