Thought I'd share this with you guys... My daughter got married last friday and the song for the father/daughter dance was "I loved her first". This is the speech I gave leading into the song. I made a copy for the DJ just in case I lost my composure, but I made it through and just had trouble with the last line.
FOR THE DJ!!!!!
Here is a copy of my speech prior to the father/daughter dance… it is VERY possible I might lose my composure and have to have you finish it FOR me so I’m giving you this.
If I give you a sign… Please read the following sentence (hopefully in a humorous fashion)… then continue where I left off more seriously
Mike anticipated that he might lose it during this speech so he wisely provided me with a copy and asked me to finish it for him..
The speech….
This is one of the toughest, most wonderful times in ANY dads life… the day he gives his daughter away. For those of you that have seen the movie “Father of the Bride”, I’ve had a LOT of those flashback moments lately… her first step off the diving board into her swimming instructors arms, spelling bees, and dance recitals. Reading “apple tree Christmas” or “The Snow Child” as bedtime stories around Christmas time, and perhaps most special, the time we got to spend together going to and from the soccer fields where, stuck in the car for 30 min each way, we really had a chance to get to know each other. After high school.. still more memories…. moving her into her first dorm room, watching her graduate, and then seeing her off on her first day of work after graduation.
Somewhere in the middle of all that …. she met this guy. A guy who understands her inside and out.. and loves the whollle package. A man I respect who carries talent, humility, and faith in equal measures. If I could have hand picked a guy (and trust me there is NO way she would have let me pick a guy)… but if I COULD have picked a guy.. I could not have done better in who she found than Cliff.
I guess part of being a parent is helping your kids be ready for their own futures…
…..so Cliff, I prayed that she’d find you some day, but it’s still hard to give her away…. I loved her first….
