From The Poetry Dictionary by John Drury...... "Muse 1. The spirit, force, or person that inspires or impels a poet to create. 2. The deity which epic poets such as Homer invoke at the beginning of their poems, specifically one of the Greek goddesses, daughter of Mnemosyne (or Memory), who spoke through the artists she inspired. Like other epic poems The Odyssey begins with an invocation to the muse (translated here by Robert Fitzgerald): Sing in me, Muse, and through me tell the story of that man skilled in all ways of contending, the wanderer, harried for years on end, after he plundered the stronghold on the proud height of Troy. The Greeks recognized nine muses, associated with different arts or sciences: Calliope (epic poetry), Clio (history), Erato (love poetry), Euterpe (lyric poetry), Melpomene (tragedy), Polyhymnia (songs to the gods), Terpsichore (dance), Thalia (comedy), and Urania (astronomy)." YOUR CHALLENGE FOR THIS WEEK: Write at least one poem invoking or paying tribute to a muse, either your own personal muse or one of the nine classic muses. Use any form you wish in your invocation(s)/tribute(s). Please post each piece in this forum as a new thread and feel free to comment on everyone else's offerings. I can't wait to see what you all come up with. If you have a suggestion for a future challenge please let me know via Private Message here or by an email to poeticrainbows@yahoo.com Your feedback and suggestions are much appreciated! Miranda
