I'm looking for some creative thoughts on how to improve one particular aspect of my writing.
I have a reasonable vocabulary, but I have a tendency to write in simple words and phrases.. my works have been called minimalist. I actually like that most of the time. However, I would like to expand my toolbox and be able to write more expressive statements.. more adjectives.. more descriptors.
In other words, instead of:
It was a really bad storm
I want to be able to write
You could feel the danger in the air, the green of the storm clouds took on an almost evil look..
LOL.. just that second sentence took me about 4 minutes to write. I want sentences with more descriptors to just FLOW.
Does anyone have any exercises I could do to improve on this??
This would really help me.. any and all suggestions welcome!!

Well, I have some things that I do that have seemed to help me. I used to learn a new word from the dictionary every day and share it with my boys. We would just open it up randomly and point. Rhyming dictionaries can be a helpful tool, at times, especially when writing songwork or a particular rhyme scheme. An excercise that may help is to think of a list of 10 or 20 words. Then, individually come up with as many related or descriptive words as possible for each.
The art of Haiku is great for just using your brain to write efficiently and descriptively, having to use a specific and minimalist approach.
Collaborating has always been a wonderful way to push your own style and expressive boundaries. Hook up with one or two of the writers here, email them with the start of a poem, you add a line or two, they add a line or two... you get the idea.
Read as much of the masters as you can. Nothing teaches us like those that have achieved. We have a forum here at Mystic that may interest you and give you a place to start there. Hope some of this is useful~
